Young Nanuq, Polar Light // Framed Print
A young polar bear follows the scent of a recently butchered bowhead whale on the Alaskan sea ice. Traditional Iñupiaq whale hunts provide a source of food for the bears, particularly in the the fall when they are on the verge of starvation caused by reduced pack ice in the summer months. Many Iñupiat prefer to let the bears feed provided they maintain a safe distance from people. On this day, I was up early in the morning helping my Iñupiat friends out on the ice when the sun broke through a low marine layer of clouds, giving us the most beautiful light I have ever seen. This young nanuq appeared moments later, following the scent of the whale, and I was able to scoot in close enough to get some good photographs of a magical moment of humans and wildlife living together in harmony.
