Hanging the American flag upside-down is a sign of distress and a common protest symbol used by the Lakota over decades of colonization. This tipi, emerging from the first snows of Dakota winter, was one of thousands at the Dakota pipeline protest at Standing Rock, a sign of endurance and strength through extreme conditions. I found this level of resilience to be everywhere at Oceti Sakowin camp, an Indigenous movement of incredible power that brought me to tears.
